This Week’s Features

It was such a slow week since most of our sports events were cancelled due to the snow storm that came through. That meant I had to scramble to find some sort of art to go in our sports section next Tuesday. On my way back home from photographing the snowy baseball diamond and softball batting practice, I did a double-take as I drove past a giant snow sculpture of a nude female body in front of a frat house. It made for a rather amusing feature to add to this week’s collection!

MSHSAA Softball

Between Friday and Saturday I shot nine softball games, varying from quarterfinal to third-place games to the state championship for each of the four high school sports classes.

It was a grueling weekend, considering it was my fall break from school, but seeing teenage girls throw their gloves in the air, jump on the backs of their teammates and hoist big wooden trophies made the exhausting two days a success. I am so thankful I was given the opportunity by Ric Wilborn, through the recommendation by my friend David Welker, to shoot for MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Activities Association). I had quite a few images I liked.

Hard-Fought Tears

I photographed a freelance assignment for The Daily Item out of Sunbury, Pa. that has been following the 9- to- 10-year-old little league softball team Milton to their semifinal game played today in Greensburg.

It was a definite challenge shooting through fencing. Usually most fields have some openings, but this one was fully enclosed and the field was so small that 200mm was still too short but 300mm was a little too long. However, the moments beside the action are what told the game story the most. Milton had a nice lead, only to lose it in the 5th inning. It was tough to watch a dugout of little girls cry!

An Average Wednesday

As of today, I have completed my first week of internship with the Tribune-Review.

So far, I have learned some great tips from the photo staff led by chief Barry Reeger.  In particular, feature hunting is an art that I hope to get the hang of in the next several weeks.

My only assignment today was to photograph a very slow-paced girl’s softball game in California, Pa. Afterwards, I drove 45 minutes back to the office, worked up my photos and decided to explore. By that time it was dusk and since my shift didn’t end until 10 p.m, I wondered around Greensburg–a part of Pittsburgh that’s still new to me.

I heard of Peach Plaza Skate Park and decided to photograph skaters in the sunset as a way to practice layering techniques Barry had coached to me. It’s an average feature, but it’s a start to my learning experience.

Extra Inning Too Much for Softball Bears

The Missouri State softball team lost a 2-1 decision against Tulsa in eight innings at Killian Stadium tonight.
