Wiz Khalifa

Rap artist Wiz Khalifa performed at JQH tonight in front of a sold out crowd. The event was sponsored by Missouri State University’s Student Activities Council.

Wiz, from Pittsburgh, Penn., is most famous for his Billboard No. 1 single “Black and Yellow” which was nominated for two Grammy’s in 2011 (Best Rap Song & Best Rap Performance). He won Best New Artist from American Music Awards and BET. Wiz has three full-length albums and a fourth, O.N.I.F.C., due out this year.

I was only allowed to photograph the first three songs in the pit. Despite the stench of marijuana evaporating from the high school- and college-aged crowd, Wiz put on a great show. It was nice to see my hometown of Pittsburgh represented by fans wearing Pirates, Penguins and Steelers hats and shirts.

Bears Tested In Front of NFL Scouts

Eight current and former Missouri State players tested their physicality in front of 13 NFL scouts Friday morning at Plaster Field in hopes of chasing their professional dream.

Scouts from the Bills, Colts, Jaguars, Chiefs, Giants, Eagles, Bears, Packers, Panthers, Buccaneers, 49ers, Steelers and Seahawks tested the pro hopefuls in the 40-yard dash, broad jump, shuttle run, three-cone drills and position-specific tests after evaluations in the weight room.

Bears Jermaine Saffold and Chris Douglas were the day’s headliners. Saffold sprinted the best 40-yard time of the day at 4.36 and also stuck a broad jump of 10-feet, 3 inches while Douglas, who has been training in Atlanta at the WPI Athletics training facility, registered a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash.

Happy 100th Birthday

The Standard has printed through five different university names, two world wars, appearances in the Final Four and Sweet Sixteen, an appearance in the College World Series along with the tenures of countless faculty, staff and students that have passed through this institution. For the past 100 years The Standard has served the Missouri State community by bringing information for students, by students. Today, we commemorate in this special section the work and dedication of those that came before us. It’s this foundation and legacy that defines the course for The Standard as we enter our second century of publication.

This was my first layout design. Photo Editor Michael Gulledge and I worked long hours during our fall semester finals week, rummaging through archived images and clippings dating as far back as 1912 courtesy of MSU Photo Services and the Meyer Library’s special collections. I think our diligence paid off nicely.
