D-Day Veteran

Veteran Leroy “Whitey” Schaller, 89, of Fairfield in Westmoreland County fought in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a German POW camp.

As the nation pauses today to remember the D-Day invasion of 68 years ago, the number of World War II veterans continues to dwindle. About 270,000 died last year and nearly 250,000 are expected to die this year, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
