Lady Bears Squashed by Creighton

Tonight’s game was extremely hard to watch, but I have faith the Lady Bears will bounce back. Despite the sloppy play, halftime’s dog frisbee show stole the night in my opinion!

Portraits

Last Friday I shot two back-to-back portraits.

Since the men’s basketball team had to leave at 4 p.m. to travel to Bradley, I snagged freshman Marcus Marshall quickly for a portrait before he boarded the bus. I was unsure if he would be in practice attire so I decided to do a close-up. I tend to do dramatic looking sports portraits, using the entire athlete’s body in the frame, but I didn’t have much time to test different poses. Obviously I wanted to keep the dramatic feel so I used a blue gel on a flash behind him and an orange gelled flash angled directly left of him. It made for some interesting lighting in one of the ugly Hammons Student Center gyms.

Before Marshall’s portrait, I met up with Earle Doman in his office for a more professional looking photo. His office was a little crammed so I decided to shoot in the conference room adjacent to his secretary’s desk. I thought the reflection of the table added a little bit more interest to a regular-looking headshot.

Tournament of Champions 2013

Last year I shot almost the entire Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions since I was at school a week early for intersession classes. These kids are some of the nation’s top recruits, and the tournament is full of physicality and speed. This year I was able to squeeze in a few games around my schedule, even though I couldn’t make the championship day.

First Half of Lady Bears vs. Drake

Yesterday was a little hectic with the women’s basketball game starting an hour before one of the only home swim meets of the year. I am kicking myself because the game came down to a nail-biting free throw shot in the last seconds, which I had to miss. The game gave the Lady Bears their first conference win of the season.

Here is what I got in the first half.

Missouri Overcomes Lady Bears, 91-77

By Steph Anderson | The Standard

Despite a two-point deficit going into halftime, the Missouri State Lady Bears couldn’t keep up with the hot-shooting Missouri Tigers losing 91-77 on Thursday, Dec. 6 at Mizzou Arena in front of 1,304 fans.

Although Missouri State took a promising 10-3 lead in the first two minutes, Missouri came out of the gates shooting 66.7 percent from the three-point line during the first half. In the second half, Missouri State missed its first 10 attempts and was forced to play catch-up. Missouri took the lead and never looked back, ahead by double-digits for the rest of the game.

“77 points should be enough to be in a ball game and we are going to put all the blame on the defensive end tonight,” Missouri State head coach Nyla Milleson said. “And it starts with communication and doing your job individually to make this team better, and we just didn’t do it.”

Morgan Eye scored a game-high of 21 points, who was one of five Missouri players to net 14 or more points. Christiana Shorter led Missouri State with 12 points.

“We just need to play the defense we know how to play,” Missouri State guard Hannah Wilkerson said.

The Lady Bears renewed their in-state rivalry with Missouri for the first time since 2004. The Lady Bears and Tigers have played just four times since 1990, meeting each year from 2001-04.

“We would love to continue the series, but this game is no more important than any other game on our schedule,” Milleson said. “We have great fans, we have great following and we are disappointed we didn’t play better.”

I didn’t have to shoot tonight’s game, but I wanted to experiment a little. My original idea was to shoot the entire game from the catwalk. But by the second half, the score was starting to get very close, emotion was intensifying and I wasn’t having as much luck as I thought I would with the overhead angle. Here is a slew of my favorites.

Cowgirls Tie Down Lady Bears in Regular-Season Opener

An upset over No. 22 Oklahoma State was within reach for the Lady Bears tonight–the same team that ended their post-season play last March. Even though you can’t ever blame the refs, they had a major impact on the outcome of the game. If the Lady Bears can finish their very first game to a ranked opponent only down by three points, they could be a major threat when conference play begins in a few weeks.
