First Half of Men’s Basketball vs UNI

I have been trying to take some personal time over the last week or so since basketball season and other stresses have been wearing on me. I think it is healthy to realize when you have been overworked and see the result of that in your takes. Here is the first half of the men’s basketball game vs. UNI which marked the 20th loss for Missouri State this season.

Lady Bears Can’t Catch Up in Annual Pink Game

This was probably my weakest shooting game of the season. Luckily the Lady Bears were wearing cool jerseys to make up for my off night.

Lady Bears Net Season-High 91 Points in Win over Bradley

The Lady Bears duplicated their 91-point score from last game, beating Bradley 91-86 at JQH Arena. Five players scored in double-digits, bringing MSU to second in scoring in the MVC.

I have been getting really bored with shooting basketball so I try as much as I can to mix things up. I spent a majority of the first half using my 16-35mm and most of the second-half shooting from the catwalk with a 70-200mm. This game, I tried to find photos that were unique to this game and not something I usually get every game–like a typical layup photo shooting directly up the players’ armpits. I feel like I am getting a little better at challenging myself.

Legendary Coach, Title IX and Big Lady Bear Win

Today proved to be a great showcase of women’s athletics at JQH. Missouri State won 91-76 over Illinois State, women’s basketball legendary coach Cheryl Burnett had an honorary jersey celebration at halftime and past female MSU student-athletes were recognized during the pregame for the 40th anniversary of Title IX.

It was great to see the girls rebound tremendously from their sloppy game Friday, especially on this monumental day in MSU athletics. I was so glad to be a part of it all. Congratulations to all involved in the ceremonies and in the win. Just like our athletics department’s slogan, and as cheesy as it sounds, it was a great day to be a Bear.

Bears Stun Evansville 62-61

The basketball Bears won a stunning game against Evansville today by one point. I was totally not expecting the “W”, but I am glad there was some emotion near the end of the game.

Lady Bears Suffer Tough Loss Against Indiana State

The Lady Bears have been hot and cold this season, dropping tonight’s game to Indiana State 71-67.

During the first media timeout at 16 minutes, I was honored at center-court for the Academic Spotlight with Earle Doman, Vice President of Student Affairs, for my ACP 3rd place national photojournalism award from last November. It is slightly awkward to have 3,000 people stare at you for a minute as you blankly gaze into a video camera lens and wave. But it made me smile more naturally when my three photo friends (Bruce, Kevin and Jesse) came running over to snap my photo. They are the best and made me feel famous!

I am still shooting RAW and haven’t looked back since I converted last week; it gives me better white balance and detail. Since I have shot roughly 20+ games thus far into both men’s and women’s basketball seasons, my 70-200mm is beginning to feel stale. Luckily Kevin White brought along the 400mm so I had fun shooting with it from the upper bowl for the last five minutes.

Bears Earn Much-Needed MVC Win

Ice Bears Sweep Rival Mizzou, 3-2 and 7-2

Every Ice Bears game is entertaining, but none compare to the annual Mizzou series. I went to Friday and Saturday nights’ games, and both were packed. I was lucky to find a slight spot of clean glass for every period although everyone was touching elbows and filed in rows to catch a glimpse of the game. It is so good to see the sport of ice hockey gain popularity even in the Ozarks–kind of an unlikely place. And with the Ice Bears on a roll this season, I hope they continue to sell tickets and expand bleachers so that photographers have more space to shoot!

No. 20 Shockers Defeat Basketball Bears

Men’s basketball has really lost its excitement this season. The Bears have lost four straight MVC games, dropping to eighth place in a 10-team conference. There was, however, a glimmer of hope from MSU freshman Gavin Thurman who netted a career-high of 21 points last night.

Lady Bears Squashed by Creighton

Tonight’s game was extremely hard to watch, but I have faith the Lady Bears will bounce back. Despite the sloppy play, halftime’s dog frisbee show stole the night in my opinion!
