Bears’ Season Ends with MVC Tournament Loss to Wichita State

Missouri State’s two-game winning streak was cut short when it mattered the most last night, losing 69-59 to No. 2 MVC seed Wichita State in a hard-fought game at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Personally, I am glad that we at least made it past the first round or else this trip would have been somewhat of a waste, but it was promising to see the amount of heart the team showed despite their awful season.

Here are some frames of the action and emotion.

Bears Escape SIU to Advance in MVC Tournament

I arrived at Scottrade Center incredibly late because of the awfully slow MetroLink that I rode from the airport (near my hotel) to the arena. I sprinted to the press entrance  to swipe my credential from the stack before heading onto the floor to find my designated spot about two minutes until tipoff. Phew!

Our men’s basketball team played their hardest tonight, and it showed in the final score. It is great that my stay in St. Louis isn’t short-lived like last year’s MVC Tournament, but the win meant my spring break has been cut a day short!

I am looking forward to tomorrow’s 6 p.m. game against Wichita State and hope to capture more emotion than in this game.

Bears Victorious on Senior Night

The men’s basketball team earned an overdue conference win 64-56 this weekend against Bradley to secure a No. 7 seed in the MVC tournament. It also concluded my shooting career in JQH Arena. Although it is just a game of basketball, the last four years of photographing almost all the home Bears and Lady Bears games, equaling about 60 total, have really helped me hone my shooting ability. Basketball games at the Q on weekends have given me a sense of confidence behind the camera and practice to story-tell through a series of images. I will never forget sitting next to my friends behind the dashed line on the smooth hardwood floor–or looking like an idiot on TV after flying into the concrete by a sweaty player’s uncontrollable momentum.

Lady Bears Top Evansville, 66-63

The Lady Bears came out strong on Saturday, but the game came down to the wire. Thankfully it ended as a win, furthering themselves in the conference standings and sealing my last home Lady Bear game of my college career. I think I have photographed more women’s basketball games during my four years at MSU than any other sport. Even though they are just 40 minute games every week during the winter months, it has really helped me develop my skills of shooting on a deadline, always keeping my camera up, looking for photos besides game action and capturing emotion.
