A Slight Panic Attack

Last night I photographed an AAABA game in Johnstown at an awesome field called Point Stadium.

After I shot the entire game with Barry Reeger’s Nikon D3 and a 300mm, I went to the closest McDonald’s to use free wifi for transmission. Instead of lugging the big camera/lens combination into the restaurant, I took the memory card out to place into my camera that wasn’t so bulky (I do not have a card reader so I use a USB cable to connect camera to Mac). Just when I began ingesting the photos into Photo Mechanic, my camera read “no images.” Gulp…

I tried putting it back into the Nikon again, and it said the same thing. Long story short, my card was somehow reformatted, and I had to make the embarrassing call to the newsroom that I had nothing for them to use.

But when I drove an hour home and tried reading the memory card one more time, it worked! It is funny how no matter how much fancy equipment you use, something as small as a memory card can ruin your entire shoot. Glad my photos came out from hiding! Here are my favorites. Ignore the graininess.

Shotgun Class

It is really difficult photographing shooters because of safety. Obviously, I had to stay several feet behind the shooters, and I had to wear eye and ear protection. Not the easiest situation, but I think I came away with a few nice ones of the boys.

Hard-Fought Tears

I photographed a freelance assignment for The Daily Item out of Sunbury, Pa. that has been following the 9- to- 10-year-old little league softball team Milton to their semifinal game played today in Greensburg.

It was a definite challenge shooting through fencing. Usually most fields have some openings, but this one was fully enclosed and the field was so small that 200mm was still too short but 300mm was a little too long. However, the moments beside the action are what told the game story the most. Milton had a nice lead, only to lose it in the 5th inning. It was tough to watch a dugout of little girls cry!

A $10 Bonus

On my way to Latrobe this afternoon, I saw a couple flipping tires near several hay bales. I thought it looked too interesting to pass up. It is funny that when you need a stand alone feature, you only see the usual (people walking their dog, kids playing on a jungle gym or workers roofing). Although we didn’t need a feature for tomorrow’s paper, it was a nice excuse to meet some neighbors in Melcroft.

In Latrobe, I photographed St. Vincent College’s Challenge Program “Wizard Camp”, a weeklong overnight camp for high school and middle school students to be introduced to the college experience. They had an activity period which included painting wizard wands,  acting and playing Quidditch. I felt a little out-of-the-loop since I have never read nor seen any of the Harry Potter books or films. Luckily, I had the St. Vincent Archabbey Basilica in the background which added to the Harry Potter-ness!

When I returned to the office, I sent my photos real quick before I was off to find an overturned tractor-trailer. There was so much traffic along the turnpike that I parked my car alongside the ramp in New Stanton and walked a mile or so until I reached the toll booth. That’s when I was yelled and ordered to walk back to my car. After driving around some hills I found a place that had a good view of the accident. Fortunately, I made a quick photo after all my trouble, and I found a $10 on the ramp from earlier. So worth it.

East Hempfield vs. Hempfield West

There was some good action tonight at the Pitt-Greensburg baseball field, especially at second base. I was thankful that I was allowed to shoot in the dugout because fencing is such a burden.

There is nothing like working an evening at a baseball game. Once I grabbed the rosters from the coaches, it was pure fun for two hours.
