Bears Control Panthers, 63-51

After several disappointing one-point heartbreakers recently, the Bears gained some confidence against MVC rival Northern Iowa by winning 63-51 on Saturday, Januaray 28, 2011 at JQH Arena.

Although the past four matchups had been one-point decisions, the Bears used scoring threat Kyle Weems, who notched 20 points and 10 rebounds for his 13th career double-double, to maintain UNI for most of the game.

The Panthers led 9-3 early in the contest, but the Bears caught up quickly to control the lead until the final buzzer.

Lady Bears Victorious at Home

With 21 forced turnovers against the Indiana State Sycamores and four players scoring with double digits, the Lady Bears improved to5-3 in the MVC standings with the 84-70 win on Friday, January 27, 2011 at JQH Arena.

Despite Sycamore Deja Mattox’s career high of 31 points, ISU could not keep up, trailing 45-41 at the half, their tightest margin of the game. Mattox tied her school record for three-pointers in a single game, going  7-for-10 from behind the arc.

Roberson led the Lady Bears with 19 points, Shorter added 18 and a career high seven steals, and Buer scored 13 points for a season high. Garrison, who played with a protective mask after breaking her nose in a previous game, sunk 12, while Snow matched her career high with nine points.

I ordered three PocketWizard Plus IIs last week, and so far only one has showed up at my doorstep. Nevertheless, I used the one I had and shot this game with The Standard’s four strobes mounted high up on the catwalk. The rich color is incomparable to existing light when shooting in JQH Arena!

No. 19 Creighton Slips By Bears

It was a game of cat and mouse between MVC rivals Missouri State and No. 19 Creighton tonight at JQH Arena.

The Bears, who led at intermission, had a chance to capitalize but an off-balance Kyle Weems shot with 6.4 seconds left bounced off the rim into Creighton’s hands.

Creighton’s McDermott caught the rebound, but missed a one-and-one, giving the Bears one last chance to win.  However, MSU’s Downing missed a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line to give Creighton the 66-65 win.

This is the Bears’ third loss in a row, putting them in a three-way tie for fourth place in the MVC standings.

Happy 100th Birthday

The Standard has printed through five different university names, two world wars, appearances in the Final Four and Sweet Sixteen, an appearance in the College World Series along with the tenures of countless faculty, staff and students that have passed through this institution. For the past 100 years The Standard has served the Missouri State community by bringing information for students, by students. Today, we commemorate in this special section the work and dedication of those that came before us. It’s this foundation and legacy that defines the course for The Standard as we enter our second century of publication.

This was my first layout design. Photo Editor Michael Gulledge and I worked long hours during our fall semester finals week, rummaging through archived images and clippings dating as far back as 1912 courtesy of MSU Photo Services and the Meyer Library’s special collections. I think our diligence paid off nicely.

Prep Standouts’ Transition to D-1 Basketball

Two Missouri high school standouts made the tough transition from playing high school ball to a D-1 program.

Sophomore Hannah Wilkerson, a Miller High School graduate, topped the Missouri high school boys and girls scoring record with 3,724 points.

Whitney Edie, a four-time Ozark 7 Conference Player of the Year at Exeter High School, finished her prep career as the ninth highest scoring girl in Missouri high school basketball history with 2,792 points.

With five seniors to graduate after this season, Wilkerson and Edie hope to be an instrumental role in continuing the winning Lady Bear tradition.

Basketball Bears Handed Another Tough Loss

Evansville outlasted Missouri State in the final seconds of regulation before winning 87-82 in overtime today at JQH Arena.

The Bears held a seemingly secure lead for most of the second half, but Purple Ace Denver Holmes sunk a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining. Another stunning Holmes’ shot with 16 seconds left propelled Evansville to overtime.

Coming off the bench, Lewis Jones led Evansville (8-9, 3-4) with a game-high 24 points, breaking a four-game losing streak to MVC opponents.

The Bears suffered tough loses during their past two conference games, but their endurance will be tested when No. 21 Creighton comes to JQH Arena this Wednesday night at 7:05.
